Saint’Efisio – Cagliari

Saint’Efisio was born in 250 A.D. at  Elijah, near Antioch, in Asia Minor. He was enlisted into the army of Diocletian to fight Christians, but on the way to Italy he converted himself into Christianity. He was a Christian martyr under Diocletian, venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.

The festival in honour of this Saint is held in the city of   from the 1st to the 4th of May, every year without interruption since 1657.

It’s celebrated to dissolve a vow made to him by the city in 1656 that liberate Cagliari from the plague. The story goes saying that from the 1652 wave of plague, carried by the Catalan sailors docked at the port of Alghero, hit the whole island, especially Cagliari, where the population was halved.

This festival is characterized by a long procession consisting of a walk of about 65 km from the church of Stampace to Nora where the Saint was martyred. At this festival take part the traccas, festively decorated carts pulled by oxen, and folk groups, about 5,000 people with the traditional Sardinian costume from all over the island.
